Goin' to the Chapel

Goin' to the Chapel addresses the current cultural climate as well as one significant intersection between local government and personal freedom: the marriage license. On the evenings of the exhibition for the course Site-Specific Installation, the Reverend Julie Perini, on behalf of the Church of Julie Perini, will perform as many wedding ceremonies as possible. Participants in the Goin' to the Chapel project will be encouraged and permitted to marry whomever (human or otherwise) or whatever inanimate object they choose.

The Church of Julie Perini (CoJP) is a faith-based organization that has been in existence since the fall of 2003. Originally conceived as a revolutionary Church that would attempt to garner funding from the White House Office of Faith-Based Organizations and Community Initiatives, the CoJP is now poised to participate in the nationwide movement in support of same-sex partnerships. From the CoJP mission statement: The Church of Julie Perini hopes to foster a spirit of revolution among constituents that will lead to heightened senses of personal empowerment, psychological liberation, social freedom, and the eventual overthrow and abolition of existing repressive political and societal structures.

The Reverend Perini feels that this installation at City Hall will be an excellent opportunity to 1) spread the mission of the Church, 2) offer a critical commentary on the current national political situation, 3) demonstrate support for the recent "trend" in local government which is to defy federal regulation and allow same-sex partnerships to legally wed, and 4) explode the meaning of "marriage" altogether.

The Reverend Perini will construct a small chapel façade to be installed at the exhibition space. She will be dressed in appropriate attire that will make her easily identifiable as the Reverend. The Reverend will provide participants with CoJP marriage licenses, the opportunity to take a photograph by the "chapel," and a cupcake with bride/groom/other object decorations. The Reverend will take video footage of participants for her own records and for the eventual production of a video about the event, as well as request that participants fill out a form describing their reasons for marrying a particular person, animal, or object. Informative materials about the CoJP will also be on hand for the public to take with them.

The CoJP will publicize the event and solicit community involvement with flyers and with a few strategic newspaper advertisements.
