Striking Structures

Right now the mop closet looks like any semi-abandoned mop closet might. There is a large sink to the left. The bottom of the sink is covered with a thick layer of grim. A couple of crusty mops are lounging in their buckets. I plan to make the mop closet a little bizarre. Everything that you would expect to find in a mop closet will be there; it will just be out of place.

I've been thinking about the way people organize. I want to take each element of the mop closet currently and rearrange it in a noticeably different and nonfunctional way. I'm still not sure how to do this exactly. I know that I want the dirt to stay but become tidy. The mop closet is a challenge to clean because its function is to provide storage for the things that you normally use to clean the more important living spaces with.

What is in the mop closet currently? Not much: dirt, mop, mop bucket. I can't remember much else being there. Things will be added in the process of cleaning, and these things will stay inside once they enter. It is a guideline. What goes in never comes out.

I'm not certain what this means, nor am I certain about the back space of the closet yet. The back space is almost like a secret, a hidden cranny, something to discover and I still haven't discovered it. My mind has been all over the place with that section of the space. I've considered many different options at this point...

OK, I've decided what to do with the secret space, the closet in the closet. I want to add three wide pipes. They will lead to monitors that will be covered with bricks in all spaces except for where you look through the pipes. The idea is based around the height of people, having to do with what we should show children and what we shouldn't.

I'm not sure about the content or placement of all three videos yet. I want to show one video of Baubo, the Greek goddess of obscenity, singing Deep and Wide, a Christian children's song. It's important that I show this video. I'm thinking I would want to place this one in the 3 foot tall pipe so that any toddlers who might happen along could easily view the contents of the pipe. I still have to think about what I want to show the parents or grown ups.

It's easy for me to link the two closets together because they are both dealing with structure. The first closet is dealing with the objects of the space in the most literal, physical and primitive way possible. The second closet just highlights social structures, what if more ancient people had chosen Baubo instead of Jesus or God.

Did I mention that Baubo has no head, her nipples are her eyes, and she talks through her vagina?
