Joyce Maynard & J. D. Salinger

In 1998, Joyce Maynard, a 44 year-old writer, published a long essay titled "At Home in the World," in which she narrated her nine-month love affair with Salinger when she was 18 and a Yale freshman, and he was 53 and a New Hampshire recluse. Salinger initiated contact after he read her 1972 essay in the New York Times Magazine, "An 18 Year-Old Looks Back on Life."
