Research Interests: Civil War & Reconstruction, Southern History, Legal History, the history of violence, crime and punishment

Current Research: I am currently revising my dissertation, "The Politics of Protection: Violence and the Political Culture of Reconstruction," for publication. The project examines how slave emancipation challenged Americans' ideas about the acceptability of collective violence, the role of guns in political life and culture, and the evolution of self-defense as a fundamental American right.
