SUNY Distinguished Professor

Award Recognition: Recipients receive a $5000 increase to their base salary and are given a stipend for travel & research; Distinguished faculty are listed at the head of faculty lists and receive the Distinguished Professor designation as their official state title.

Criteria:

  • Candidates must hold the rank of full professor and must be nationally or internationally recognized for achievements in research, scholarship and creative activity.
  • Candidates may not be nominated for designation to another Distinguished Faculty rank within five years of the date of appointment to distinguished rank. Posthumous nominations are ineligible.
  • The individual must have achieved national or international prominence and a distinguished reputation within his or her chosen field through significant contributions to the research literature or through artistic performance or achievement in the case of the fine arts.
  • The person's work must be of such a character that his or her presence will tend to elevate the standards of scholarship of colleagues both within his or her academic field and beyond.
  • The person's work must be of such quality that students and scholars on other campuses of the University could and would wish to benefit by lectures and seminars, or other appropriate presentations he or she might bring to them.
  • Nomination must be kept confidential.

Process:

  • Departments should consult with the cognizant Associate Dean for their area to discuss the candidacy of an individual. The Dean's Office should be given formal notice of a nomination per the timetable below.
  • The department should begin the process of compiling the preliminary dossier as soon as possible after notifying the Dean's Office. Please allow ample time to send requests and receive responses from outside evaluators (if necessary) and obtain the appropriate supporting documents.
  • An initial copy of the preliminary dossier should be delivered to the Dean's Office as soon as it is complete (but no later than the stated deadline below). The dossier will be reviewed, recommendations will be made for any changes and the notated copy will be returned to the department.
  • Once corrections are made by the department, the original preliminary dossier and 15 copies should be returned to the Dean's Office. Copies of the dossier will be distributed to the APT Committee members, the cognizant Associate Dean, and the Sr. Associate Dean. A meeting date with the APT Committee will be set and the department will be notified of the meeting date and time.
  • After the APT Committee has reviewed & voted on the nomination, the dossiers will be prepared for transferal to the Provost's Office.
  • The preliminary dossier will be reviewed by a special panel of evaluators within the Provost's Office. Their decision regarding the nomination will be conveyed to the Dean's Office and the department will be notified whether to prepare the final dossier, along with any recommendations from the Provost's Office.
  • An initial copy of the final dossier should be given to the Dean's Office as soon as it is complete. The dossier will be reviewed, recommendations will be made for any changes and the notated copy will be returned to the department.
  • Once corrections are made by the department, the original final dossier and 15 copies should be returned to the Dean's Office. These will be forwarded to the Provost's Office with the requisite letter from the Dean, no later than October 15th .
  • The final dossier will be reviewed by a special panel of evaluators within the Provost's Office and a recommendation regarding the nomination will be sent to Albany, with notification of the recommendation sent to the Dean's Office.

Timetable:

Preliminary dossier ~

  • Nominations may be submitted at any time. Please consult with the cognizant Associate Dean for your department as to the merits of the case before developing a complete nomination.
  • If consultations with the cognizant Associate Dean result in a positive decision, send a brief memo stating your intent to nominate the candidate to Monica Vacanti.
  • The original dossier plus 15 copies should be delivered to the Dean's Office; it will be reviewed by the CAS APT Committee & forwarded to the Provost's Office.

Final dossier ~

  • The original dossier plus 6 copies should be delivered to the Dean's Office; it will be reviewed and forwarded to the Provost's Office.

Nomination to include (in the following order):

  • Checklist Cover Sheet
  • Table of Contents
  • Preliminary Summary Presentation (5 page max.)
  • Chair's Letter
  • Candidate's Vita
  • Five evaluator letters (at least four from outside reviewers)
  • List of 20 outside evaluator names
  • Dean's Letter

Final dossier ~

  • Checklist Cover Sheet
  • Updated Table of Contents
  • Revised Summary Presentation (5 page max.)
  • Revised Chair's Letter (reflecting full dossier)
  • Supplemental supporting material (award citations, recent reviews of published work, etc.)
  • Candidate's Vita (comprehensive with complete bibliography)
  • 12-20 outside evaluator letters (distinguished & disinterested individuals addressing the importance of the work and the impact on the field).  Should include original 4.
  • Name or names of the appropriate disciplinary association or learned societies to which the dossier may be submitted, with the names of any officers or members who have expressed support for the candidacy or who may be consulted about the candidacy.
  • Supporting documentation (letters acknowledging University service, etc.)
  • Copies of selected major publications
  • Dean's Letter (with description of nomination process)
