Lester W. Milbrath Award Fund

Professor Milbrath joined the University at Buffalo faculty in 1965, where he enjoyed a successful 26 year career. During his tenure at UB Dr. Milbrath became extremely devoted to the study of environmental issues.  His research focused on the relationship between environment and society, specifically on environmental attitudes, perceptions, beliefs and values, as well as the characteristics of a sustainable society. He also studied citizen participation in environmental policy decisions, on conceptualizing and measuring quality of environment and quality of life, and on foresight and planning for a sustainable future.  Dr. Milbrath’s passion for the environment led him, in 1976, to become the Director of the UB Environmental Studies Center. He wrote six books related to both environmental issues and political science. As the result of his life’s work he was the recipient of many awards, including the Lifetime Environmental Achievement Award from the UB Environment and Society Institute.  He also served on the Town of Amherst Conservation Committee.

The award was created to reward a hard-working student who has demonstrated a commitment to our environment.  The student will be of at least sophomore standing, and will be studying in one of the disciplines taught by Dr. Milbrath—Political Science, Sociology, or Environmental Studies.  Applicants will submit an essay for review by the Undergraduate Awards Committee; a letter of recommendation should also be submitted by a faculty member of advisor.  The selected recipient will demonstrate a commitment to environmental advocacy, and a desire to further their studies in the environmental arena.
